1099 Taxes Explained: What Independent Contractors Need to Know

How 1099 taxes work for independent contractors and freelancers. Self-employment tax, quarterly payments, deductions and how to file.

If you receive a 1099-NEC (Non-Employee Compensation), you are classified as an independent contractor and your tax situation is significantly different from W-2 employees.

The biggest difference is self-employment tax. As a 1099 contractor, you pay both the employee and employer portions of Social Security and Medicare, totaling 15.3% on your net earnings. W-2 employees only pay 7.65% because their employer covers the other half.

On $80,000 of 1099 income with $10,000 in business expenses, your net profit is $70,000. Your SE tax is approximately $9,891. You also owe federal income tax on your adjusted gross income (after deducting half of SE tax). Your total tax bill would be roughly $18,000 to $20,000 depending on your other deductions.

Compare this to a W-2 employee earning $70,000 who pays about $10,500 in federal tax and FICA combined. The 1099 contractor pays nearly double.

Quarterly estimated tax payments are required if you expect to owe $1,000 or more in tax. The deadlines are April 15, June 15, September 15 and January 15. Use Form 1040-ES to calculate and submit payments. Underpayment penalties apply if you do not pay enough throughout the year.

Key deductions for 1099 contractors include home office (simplified: $5 per sq ft up to 300 sq ft), vehicle expenses (67 cents per mile for 2025), health insurance premiums (100% deductible), retirement plan contributions (SEP-IRA up to 25% of net earnings), equipment and software, professional development, and internet and phone (business percentage).

The biggest tax planning move for 1099 contractors earning over $50,000 is to consider forming an S-Corp, which can save thousands in SE tax annually.
